Shocking stats not that shocking shock!
A survey by Reader’s Digest has revealed so-called shocking statistics about the British public’s lack of knowledge of classical music. Now, noone is disputing that the figures look bad (75% did not know that Elgar wrote ‘Pomp and Circumstance’, and 27% did not know he was a composer), but are they actually surprising? Classical music still finds it hard to shake off the image that it is difficult...

Holiday Snaps
Return to AP Towers after family hols come to a sad end (sad that they ended - nothing bad happened, apart from being fined by an officious Austrian). While working at AP is blissful, obviously, walking in the Slovenian Alps and then lying by a pool in Istria was not bad either.
Week one, I read The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver - what a disappointment. She has been on one writing course too...

Tweeting at the theatre?
We’ve been having an interesting debate on the @ArtsPro Twitter account today, after the lovely Katie asked a question about whether it’s OK to Tweet at the theatre. Personally, I’m all for sharing experiences and opinions, but not during the show. No offence to anyone, but your opinion is not so important that it can’t wait until the interval/end of the show. By all means tweet about plays, and...
Thinking cap
When Nosheen came for interview for the Editor’s job, she was introduced to me and said “Ah! You’re the girl who reads everything”. Now, this has always been true (I did an English degree, after all), but is more accurate since I started writing News from the Nationals once a fortnight. This basically means that I get paid to read the papers. Ace. It also means that I am a) annoying – any time...
Getting AP out into the world
Press day, surprisingly perhaps, is generally not the editorial team’s busiest day – that honour falls on a Tuesday the day before. That’s when all the news should be written, all the copy has been edited (by me), second edited (by Nosheen), read (by Pam), proofed (by Vicki and Brian), laid out on the page (by Isla)… Phew. Then we all have a nice lie down, and actual press day is usually rather...

Excitement!
Isla, Nosheen and I are off to Shift Happens next week, and I for one am very excited. The list of speakers looks great, and I’m currently compiling a wish-list of interviewees, with help from the lovely Bec at York Theatre Royal who is co-ordinating the press stuff. Hotel is booked, train tickets are booked, wardrobe is being considered (read: I have actually done some laundry) and we’re planning...

Holiday reading
Unfortunately I have returned from Cyprus.
Being the undeniable geek I am, my holiday reading included ‘Interact with Web Standards’ by Chris Mills et al, which is a seriously comprehensive introduction to web development. It is refreshing in its ability to present (what can be a fairly daunting) introduction to coding in a clear manner, and present a clear grounding to the...

The sun is shining in Cambridge this afternoon, which after three days of solid rain is cheering us all up - fickle lot that we are.
I am assessing applications for an Arts Intelligence client, and putting the finishing touches on the selection day. Over the years I have seen first hand the problems inherent in relying on interviews alone as a selection tool - assessors tend to confuse...

It’s a non-press week here at AP HQ.
The publication schedule of the fortnightly magazine defines how we speak about our time. Every week is either a ‘press week’ or a ‘non-press week’. For the editorial team (Nosheen and Eleanor), a non-press week is an opportunity to commission contributions, write features and research news stories. Nosheen is back from a quick visit to Pakistan, Eleanor...

Back at HQ
Return to AP HQ, and after only one day away the entire stash of Devon clotted-cream fudge has been troughed by my erstwhile colleagues. Still, they did have a press day to get through.
I spent my day away in Oxford, with an inspiring organisation called The Art Room. Like so many small arts organisation up and down the UK, The Art Room makes a real difference, with scant resources. They work...

Twitter, Facebook and RSS feed updates
I’ve been busy this week making changes to the ways we make content from our sites available to you.
We now have a brand new Twitter account specifically for our events listings @artspro_events, which leaves our @artspro account clear for just updates from the AP editorial and office team. This gives you a bit more choice in what you receive from us.
There’s also a new Twitter...
